How to Stop Your Phone From Tracking You

How Your Phone Tracks You Without You Knowing

    phone spying on you

We rely on our phones every day, but what most people don’t realize is just how much these devices track us. Whether you’re using apps, connecting to Wi-Fi, or simply walking around with your phone in your pocket, you’re being tracked. Your phone gathers your location data through multiple sources, sometimes without your explicit consent, and this information is often used by companies, governments, and even hackers. Luckily, there are some simple ways to stop phone tracking.

App Permissions: The First Step in Limiting Tracking

    phone app tracking

One of the easiest ways your phone tracks you is through app permissions. Many apps ask for access to your location, often for reasons that are unclear. Social media platforms, games, and shopping apps are notorious for this. Even if you’re not actively using these apps, they can still collect data in the background.

To regain control, go into your phone’s settings and review which apps have access to your location. You can disable this permission or set it to “While Using the App” for apps that absolutely need it. This small change can dramatically reduce how much of your location data is being tracked.

Turning Off Location Services for More Control

Your phone’s location services use GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth to pinpoint your exact location. While this is helpful for navigation, it’s also how your phone tracks you even when you’re not using it. Many apps use location services without you realizing it.

Disabling location services in your phone’s settings is one of the best ways to stop phone tracking. This can be a game-changer for those who want to reduce the amount of data their phone shares with apps and other services.

Using Airplane Mode and Disabling Wi-Fi/Bluetooth

    cell phone airplane mode

When you need maximum privacy, turning on Airplane Mode is a great option. This setting cuts off all signals—cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth—making it impossible for your phone to communicate with any networks. However, keep in mind that while Airplane Mode stops tracking, it also means you won’t be able to make calls or use data.

If you’re looking for more selective privacy, you can also disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth manually. These settings are often overlooked, but they can track you even when you’re not actively using them. Disabling them can add an extra layer of privacy, especially in public places where networks may not be secure.

Cell Tower Triangulation: Can It Be Stopped?

    cell phone tower tracking

Even if you turn off GPS and Wi-Fi, your phone can still be tracked through cell tower triangulation. This method uses signals from nearby cell towers to estimate your location. It’s less accurate than GPS but still effective.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to completely prevent cell tower triangulation unless you turn your phone off or use a more extreme measure, which we’ll get into next.

    VPNs: Masking Your Online Activity

    phone proton vpn

While VPNs don’t stop GPS or cell tower tracking, they do a great job of masking your online activity. A VPN routes your internet traffic through a remote server, hiding your IP address and making it difficult for websites and apps to track your location through your internet connection.

Using a VPN is especially helpful if you’re concerned about data collection from online advertisers or want to browse privately. It’s not a complete solution, but it’s a solid step toward better online privacy.

I personally use Proton Mail and their subscription plans include a VPN. If you want to support my work, use this link: Click Here.

Faraday Bag: The Ultimate Privacy Shield

    faraday bag

If you need maximum protection, a Faraday bag is the way to go. These specially designed bags block all signals to and from your phone, making it impossible for anyone to track or communicate with your device. Whether you’re worried about surveillance, hacking, or just want complete privacy, this is your best bet.

Faraday bags are perfect for high-security situations or when you want to ensure your phone is completely off the grid. Simple Everyday Tips to Reduce Tracking

If you’re not looking to go to the extreme of using a Faraday bag, there are simple things you can do every day to reduce tracking:

    • Regularly review and update app permissions.
    • Turn off location services when not needed.
    • Use Airplane Mode when you want to disconnect completely.
    • Disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in public areas.
    • Consider using a VPN to protect your online browsing.

Each of these steps will help stop phone tracking and give you more control over your privacy.

  • Spokeo: Worth The Money?

    Spokeo: Worth The Money?

    The Offer

Spokeo is website that offers it’s users the ability to find people and acquire information on them. In this article, we’re going to run through a number of searches and I will give my opinion as we go.

At the end of this article, I’ll show you how to remove your personal information from Spokeo.

    Sign-up Process

I went for the 1 month plan for $19.95 and used Paypal as the form of payment. I find that as long as you have proof you canceled (communications or a screenshot or email) it’s easier to challenge any erroneous charges.

Sign-up was relatively easy. Let’s jump into the first search.

    People Search – Name

For this search, we’ll use the infamous Turtleboy (Aidan Kearney) as the subject of the search. Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be an advanced search option right from the start. It would be nice to have a way to search the name and at least the state in the first search.

I happen to know that the second result is the correct one. Spokeo is telling us that we’ll get the profile, addresses, phones and emails for this person.

There’s some decent initial information here. I know the emails don’t go to him. The addresses, phones and relatives are correct. The court records are show to be an additional $15.00, which would bring my membership to approximately $35.00 total.

For the purpose of this review I’ll make the purchase. If you’re interested in joining my Patreon, it would be a big help, even if it’s just for a month.

I went ahead and clicked on the Background + option and another upsell!

This is absolutely insane and I’m not going to make yet another purchase. We’ll see what the court records reflect.

    Court Records

It shows no court records for Aidan. Unfortunately, this is very wrong. There multiple recent cases involving him, both civil and criminal.

    Miscellaneous Data

There’s several other pieces of data available on Aidan Kearney. Let’s go through it all.

The work is wrong on both counts.

Maybe with the current donations he’s received, that amount is close, but I doubt it’s going off that. I’m going to rate both points as incorrect.

The addresses, phones and relatives seems correct. As I would blur all that data out, there’s no sense in showing it here.

    Other People

I’m going to run several other profiles to give Spokeo a chance. Rather than go through everything again, I’ll list minimal details below.

Sean McDonough – I ran a cell phone reverse on him and it was accurate, with his details, but several other details were inaccurate. Also, there were no court records found and I manually found a DWI in FL, which is very giving with their records.

Marc Randazza – I ran the username “marcorandazza” and got 5 results that were likely incorrect. I put the same username in Whatsmyname.app, a completely free tool and it got 13 results, almost all for the correct person.

Eric Neal – I ran my addresses and name and numbers and there were no results. I’ll explain why in the next section.

    Privacy

The reason my information didn’t show up with Spokeo, is because it’s been removed. I chose to do that through a privacy company (Auru) that removes listings through multiple sites, but it can also be done manually.

To opt-out, CLICK HERE (https://www.spokeo.com/optout). What you want to do is find the url to your information and paste it in the box. Then follow the steps to opt-out.

    Conclusion

I am very disappointed with Spokeo. I believe it’s a complete waste of money and there’s probably far better tools out there. I’ll try to explore these tools in future articles.

  • Newspaper Archive

    Newspaper Archive

“Explore Billions of Articles in our Newspaper Archives.”

That’s the tagline that got me. I always have investigators that ask me about tracking down articles, deaths, marriages, births and more. How awesome would it be to have all that at your fingertips? Is having newspaper archives a useful resource though? In this article, we’re going to find out.

    https://newspaperarchive.com/

    Paid Plans

    There are 3 plans available:

    • Monthly – $22.99 (no free trial)
    • 6 Months – $15.99 billed at $95.94 (7-day free trial)
    • 1 year – $12.99 billed at $155.88 (7-day free trial)

I decided on the 6 month plan just to test out the website.

    Basic & Advanced Search

Now that I’m a full fledged (free trial) member, it’s time to search for newspaper archives. I doubt the basic search is going to work well, unless you have a unique name or keyword or title.

I attempted a keyword search in quotes:

    “Canton MA Police”

Unfortunately it seems that quote based search don’t work. This means on the basic search, you better have a very unique keyword. Let’s try the advanced search and see if we have better luck.

This is more like it! I’ll run through a series of searches and show you the results, if any.

Eric Neal – Massachusetts: 86 results

Some results had my full name in it, but most just contained my name in the result, but not in order. I sorted by the newest date, but didn’t find any results for me. I have been referenced in the paper before, but more local listings. We’re definitely not off to a good start!

Aidan Kearney – Massachusetts + Turtleboy (keyword): 0 results

Nothing on the infamous Turtleboy and I know he’s been in multiple newspapers. My hope of this newspaper archive site being a good resource is dwindling. We’ll try some more searches.

Lorne Armstrong – United States: 34 results

This is crazy! Lorne Armstrong is one of the most notable characters in TCAP (To Catch a Predator) history. Not one result led to the right person.

Marlene Dietrich – Germany: 418 results

Marlene Dietrich was a German singer and actress. I guess if I was looking into her, this would be a great resource.

    Conclusion

I was really looking forward to trying this resource. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was left severely underwhelmed. Not being able to do a search for a name and having the search show results for the name in the proper order is quite discouraging.

Is this a good resource for investigators or web sleuths.. perhaps if you’re looking for someone with a unique name. My vote is to save your money and look elsewhere.
